Mission of the Friends
The Friends of the Kroks was established to assist the Harvard Krokodiloes, Harvard University’s oldest a cappella singing group, in spreading their unique brand of song, humor, and charm throughout the world. A non-profit organization, the Friends of the Kroks is an international community of fans of the Krokodiloes, whose support allows the group to focus on their art and raison d’être: making beautiful music and sharing it with the world.
To make this possible, the Friends of the Kroks focuses on the following areas:
- Building a global community of the Kroks’ worldwide fans and supporters while always reaching out to new “friends”
- Keeping “Krok friends” abreast of the Kroks’ activities and needs through newsletters; email and regular mail updates, e-message boards, a website, an on-line chat-room with discussions between the Krokodiloes and their friends, etc.—all geared toward involving every Krok friend in realizing the mission of the Krokodiloes
- Expanding the Kroks’ global reach by subsidizing their ever-mounting travel and production expenses and by organizing special projects and concerts, enabling the Krokodiloes to concentrate less on the business of singing and more on sharing their talents and their music with audiences around the world
- Ensuring a financially secure future for the Kroks by establishing an annual endowment and assisting the Kroks in special campaigns to secure the future of the organization—such as acquiring real estate for the Kroks—allowing them to focus on making music.
From the Friends’ Founding Charter
The following is an excerpt from the Founding Charter of the newly established Friends of the Kroks, Inc.:
The Krokodiloes are unique. Their particular combination of song, wit, and charm are unrivaled anywhere in the world. And beyond entertaining an elite privileged few, they share their talents with a world audience, spreading their message of friendship and goodwill from San Francisco to St. John — the long way!
It was indeed this spreading of friendship and goodwill that inspired a friend of Benjamin Franklin to give him the following advice in 1783:
Let Englishmen be made not only to respect, but even to love you. When they think well of individuals in your native country, they will go nearer to thinking well of your country; and when your countrymen see themselves well thought of by Englishmen, they will go nearer to thinking well of England. Extend your views even further; do not stop at those who speak the English tongue, but after having settled so many points in nature and politics, think of bettering the whole race of men.
That, in their own inimitable way, is precisely what the Kroks do! They needn’t lecture, preach, or proselytize. They need only do what they do best: make audiences “respect” and even “love” them, and by doing so make the members of their international audience go a great way “nearer to thinking well of [our] country.”
And that, when all is said and done, is the primary goal of the Friends of the Kroks: to aid the Krokodiloes in their stated mission of spreading “song, humor and charm across the globe.”
